Marian Baker: Letters home from East Africa

Marian Baker

Friend Marian Baker (Weare/Henniker, NH, Friends Meeting) is again traveling in the ministry in East Africa, focusing her work on empowering women and girls. We will be posting her messages here as they arrive, linked to the title of the message.

Message 1: Safe Arrival

Greetings from sunny, green, Kaimosi, Kenya.  I arrived here yesterday after travelling via plane and bus from New Hampshire via Hartford, Connecticut. I was welcomed with a rainbow early in the morning in Nairobi, and Hamada ibises in Kaimosi, as well as welcoming Friends who were glad to see me return. Unfortunately, I did not have my camera out handy to take photos of the rainbow or the ibises. In Kaimosi I found an extremely muddy entrance, due to the El Niño torrential rains affecting Kenya these days.

Today, the group of Kenyan and Ugandan women are starting to gather for our workshop together where many plans will be made as to where I need to travel and assist. I will send out my regular full report with photos by early next week.

Thanks to you all for your support and prayers that made the long journey uneventful.

Message 8

Marian sent her report of the workshop at FTC with the following note:

Greetings to all. The main thing done this week was the Africa Archives workshop held at Friends Theological College in Kamosi, Kenya. It was a joyful gathering of all ages who eagerly worked together across Yearly Meeting boundaries to prepare to collect oral interviews of elders before the earliest leaders pass away.

After celebrating my birthday and resting a day, I have come to Kakamega to start traveling back to USA. Will take Easy Coach to Nairobi tomorrow, visit Neccy and David Kikaya, and on the 11th meet with a group of Friends in Nairobi who missed the workshop.

Then will visit Judith Nandikove briefly, meet with QW Team executive via Zoom, before boarding a plane back to USA close to midnight.

My final message will be sent when I reach home.

Thanks to you all for all your support during the travels in ministry.

In Gratitude, Marian
