In December 2020 at a Quaker Social Justice meeting of Friends Meeting at Cambridge, we stumbled across a ray of gratitude: Lo and behold, a small country, one of the poorest in the world, was the 50th country to sign and bring the Treaty on the Prohibition Against Nuclear Weapons into UN law. We Friends sent a letter to the Honduran people telling them how important their act of signing this Prohibition is.
We sent the following letter to Honduran Embassy and Honduran news outlets [the original Spanish text appears below the English translation]:

Dear Honduras People,
We want to thank all Honduran merchants, parents and youth for their valor in signing as a country the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Marïa Dolores Agüero Lara was present at the initiation of the United Nations Treaty in 2017. The National Congress of Honduras unanimously approved devolving from these Weapons on 24 September 2020. The US government sadly did not sign this Treaty, but thanks to you as the 50th country to sign, the Treaty is now a UN resolution.
We are a group of Quakers or the Religious Society of Friends from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Quakers have followed the Peace Testimony for 360+ years, refusing to carry military weapons and respecting all living creatures. We have failed in reducing the lethal weapons used among our citizens. We are dismayed at how much killing the USA exports around the world.
There is no reason for the USA, who states they fight for humanitarian rights, to manufacture nuclear weapons. We are also distressed that the US makes profits by selling nuclear weapons. We Quakers apologize for our part in the destruction caused by nuclear weapons stockpiled, sold and used for mass destruction in many countries.
Imagine our joy that Honduras provided us, Quakers around the world (and other people of faith). Your country has done something that the USA and other powerful countries were not strong enough to do. Honduras has the moral strength to do the right thing.
We, our human family, and our grandchildren for generations will thank the amazing action of you reducing the world’s deadly weapons. With this Treaty, 135 nations will stop the use and the threat of nuclear weapons in their territory. Honduras is a hero in the human family. May history remember this act of faith.

Querido pueblo de Honduras,
Quisiéramos agradecer a todos los comerciantes, padres y jóvenes hondureños por su valor al firmar como país el Tratado de Prohibición de Armas Nucleares. Marïa Dolores Agüero Lara estuvo presente en el inicio del Tratado de las Naciones. El Congreso Nacional de Honduras aprobó por unanimidad la devolución de estas Armas el 24 de septiembre de 2020. Lamentablemente, el gobierno de los Estados Unidos no firmó este Tratado, pero gracias a usted como país a firmar, el Tratado es ahora una resolución de la ONU.
Somos un grupo de cuáqueros o la Sociedad Religiosa de Amigos de Cambridge, Massachusetts. Los cuáqueros han seguido el testimonio de la paz durante más de 360 años, negándose a portar armas militares y respetando a todas las criaturas vivientes. No hemos logrado reducir las armas letales que se utilizan entre nuestros ciudadanos. Estamos consternados por la cantidad de matanzas que exporta Estados Unidos en todo el mundo.
No hay ninguna razón para que Estados Unidos, que afirma luchar por los derechos humanitarios, fabrique armas nucleares. También nos angustia que Estados Unidos obtenga ganancias vendiendo armas nucleares. Los cuáqueros nos disculpamos por nuestra participación en la destrucción causada por las armas nucleares almacenadas, vendidas y utilizadas para la destrucción masiva en muchos países.
