New England Friend: December 2015

From the Yearly Meeting Secretary

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the December 2015 edition of the New England Friend. I hope this finds you and your local meeting well in a season of widespread fear and fragile hope. In the coming year, may the web of our relationships nurtured by our Quaker communities help us to embrace our weary world with Love.

In this online issue, you'll find news from the growing edges of the Quaker movement across the six New England states.

Reaching Out and Reaching In

  • The inaugural training session for NEYM’s SAGE (Support Across Generations for Elders) Program will be a workshop at Woolman Hill over the weekend of December 11–13.

  • The Quaker outreach movement is gaining momentum in New England and beyond! After a successful one-day roundtable consultation in April 2014 at Dover Meeting, New England Yearly Meeting is hosting a weekend conference at Woolman Hill Quaker Center, April 29–May 1, 2016.

  • Middlebury Friends held their Fall Intergenerational Meeting for Worship; children remain in Worship for the whole time. During the early part of the Intergenerational Worship they heard a story from Faith and Play. The meeting has also formed an ad hoc committee on welcoming newcomers.

Looking Back: 2015 Sessions

  • New England Yearly Meeting Friends gathered for our 355th annual sessions August 1st through 6th, 2015, at Castleton University in Castleton, Vermont, seeking ways to deepen our spiritual lives and strengthen our witness by “Living into Covenant Community.”

  • The heart of Quakerism is the monthly meeting; this is where we experience the transformative presence of the Spirit which moves us to become the instruments of peace and justice God desires us to be. The business which comes before us at Sessions is, fundamentally, about how the organization supports and nurtures our meetings where we meet each week for worship.

  • Please share the news and joy from NEYM Sessions 2015 with Friends at home. Consider posting the talking points and making a report to your Meeting for business. More than 600 Friends attended NEYM Sessions. 58 of those were first-time attenders, and 120 of them were youth. Together we came to unity on:

Connecting with Friends Worldwide

  • World Quaker Day is an annual event, started by Friends in Britain to promote the education and celebration of Friends history and traditions. Expanded globally by Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC), this annual Sunday (celebrated in Quaker schools the following week) corresponds with World Communion Sunday, uniting Friends with other religious communities worldwide.

  • In October 2010, I woke to a loud, impatient voice that said, “Get a new knee, and you can go to Kakamega (Kenya)!”
