Minute of Exercise and Queries for Ministry & Counsel
At NEYM Sessions 2014, the Committee presented a printed Interim Faith and Practice containing approved texts and articulating our approach to the rest of the book. This year we were guided to continue the work on "Organization" begun in 2005, by engaging deeply with a different approach to those chapters. In the spirit of a minute of exercise which expresses the light we have been given thus far, the Committee approved offering these “Queries for Ministry and Counsel” to the Yearly Meeting.
As we have wrestled with how to describe and explain Friend’s structures as expressions of our faith, we have returned again and again to our history. We discovered that we could not describe the meaning and purpose of our structures, meant to sustain a community of faith, without coming to grips with their origins. The origin of our structures is the meeting of ministers and elders, which evolved into our present day ministry and counsel committees. Therefore, in this offering we focus on ministry and counsel’s central role in nurturing the spiritual lifeblood in our meetings.
We hope that engaging with these queries will be useful to ministry and counsel committees, meetings, and individuals, in the same way it has been important to us in our work. As always, we depend upon you to provide us with your sense of where we have served you and the Yearly Meeting well, and where we have missed the mark. Please send your comments to [email protected]
