Young Adult Friends Retreat
The night before NEYM Sessions begins, we will be meeting for a Young Adult Friends “retreat” that will be about 20 hours long, Friday evening (Aug 2) through Saturday afternoon (Aug 3)—in Rutland, VT (20 min from Castleton). This will be a time for community-building and spiritual deepening, as well as starting to dig into the themes of NEYM Sessions. This retreat is offered for folks ages 18 to 35 who plan to attend some or all of Sessions.
A lot of what happens at general NEYM Sessions is business with adults of all ages. This business gets at who we are as Friends in New England. There's a lot of important business on the agenda (talking about white supremacy, barriers to leadership in our community, climate change, how to spend money as a body, etc), and our voices are needed. Yet, some YAFs find it hard to engage when there's an agenda item that seems to have a lot of feelings around it from the past, or older Friends are speaking a lot, or there are acronyms that go unexplained, etc.
To help overcome these challenges, we'll spend time together at this retreat starting to talk about these business items and themes that will be present throughout Sessions.
We will be meeting at a United Church of Christ (UCC) church in Rutland, VT. The church is wheelchair accessible. There is an elevator that goes from ground floor to the first and second floors. I do not believe it is air conditioned. There's a kitchen and many different rooms for break-out space.
Please fill out the form here if you'd like to come, by Friday July 26th. If you're thinking about it but not sure, please fill out this short form. Like Sessions, this retreat is pay-as-led, meaning individuals can adjust what they give (sliding scale) and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. The suggested payment is $30, which covers building use & food.
Note: There will be no childcare offered at this retreat.
And, if you haven't signed up to attend NEYM Sessions, registration is here. Register as if you are arriving on Saturday (registration for the mini-retreat is separate and listed above). Register for Sessions no later than July 15 to be guaranteed a dorm room.
If you have any questions, comments, or ideas, please reach out! [email protected] is best.
The regional body of Friends in New England is supported by New England Yearly Meeting (NEYM). NEYM gathers all together to do business once a year: this year August 3-8 in Castleton, VT. This is called "NEYM Annual Sessions" or just "Sessions" or sometimes people say "I'm going to NEYM." This is an all-ages gathering, but there are also opportunities to be with other young adults.
It is, in essence, 6 days of connecting with Quakers from around New England for worship, activities, and fellowship.
