Pre-Sessions YAF Mini-Retreat
Mini-Retreat before NEYM Sessions for YAFs, Aug 3-4!
Friday, August 3 to Saturday, August 4 (the night before NEYM Sessions begins), young adult Friends will meet for a one-night "YAF-retreat." This will be a time for community-building and spiritual deepening for young adult Friends, as well as starting to dig into the themes of NEYM Sessions. Registration is here.
We'll arrive Friday night, eat together, play games, sing, worship, and talk about NEYM Sessions and what to expect this year. Saturday we'll eat breakfast, worship, and engage in a program to delve deeper into some of the items that are on the agenda for business meeting at NEYM. Some of these items are: hearing how Friends are responding to refugee and immigrant concerns, an update on the work of the White Supremacy Working Group (combatting white supremacy), seeing movement in climate change work in the Yearly Meeting, reading the new draft chapters for Faith and Practice about Membership and Spiritual Practices (actually very relevant to YAFs!), and hearing about Quakers' involvement in the the Poor People's Campaign in New England! (Among other items.)
A lot of what happens at general NEYM Sessions is business with the "older adult Quakers," and the pre-Sessions retreat is an opportunity for YAFs to look more closely at what will happen in business meeting. This business gets at who we are as Friends in New England. Friends of all ages see the importance of young adults' voices. That being said, often the agenda items come with history and baggage -- so it's nice to have some time with other young adults to look at these items before getting to business meeting.
We will be meeting at a United Church of Christ (UCC) church in Rutland, VT. The church is wheelchair accessible. There is an elevator that goes from ground floor to the first and second floors. It is not air conditioned. There's a kitchen and several rooms for break-out and sleeping space.
Please fill out the form here if you'd like to come. If you're thinking about it but not sure, please fill out the form anyways and just let me know you're still a "to-be-decided." Since we do need to give the UCC church a donation, and we need to feed ourselves, the cost is $25. If this is a barrier for your attendance, please reach out to Hilary at [email protected].
REMINDER of what NEYM Sessions is:
The regional body of Friends in New England is supported by New England Yearly Meeting (NEYM). New England Friends gather together to do business once a year: this year August 4-9 in Castleton, VT. This is called "NEYM Annual Sessions" or just "Sessions" or sometimes people say "I'm going to NEYM." This is an all-ages gathering, with opportunities to be with other young adults. (Including a "YAF dorm.")
It is, in essence, 6 days of connecting with Quakers from around New England around worship, activities, and fellowship. I highly recommend it! If you have questions, email me at [email protected].
