Young Friends Retreat
At this annual retreat for youth in grades 9-12, we will learn more and reflect on the important topics of gender, sexuality & relationships within the safety and community of Young Friends.
We will explore the theme in various ways including:
1. The Resource People Panel where trusted adults share stories related to the theme from their own lives (previous topics have ranged from coming out stories, first experiences with sex, falling in love, getting over a break-up, getting help after sexual harrassment or violence, coming out, and choosing to postpone having sex).
2. A Safer Sex Talk (optional for Young Friends, but always well attended) with a review of anatomy, menstruation, reproduction, sexually transmitted infections, and methods of contraception.
3. A Fishbowl Discussion. In the Fishbowl, Young Friends write out questions they have about relationships, gender and sexuality and listen as they are answered by small groups of Young Friends and Resource People.
4. A lesson on consent. Participants learn what consent means and how to communicate in healthy, respectful ways about touch and sex.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns about the retreat, please do not hesitate to contact the coordinator.
In addition, we will be taking a field trip during this retreat and participating in the March for Our Lives rally at the state capital in Hartford. This is a student led day of action featuring nation-wide local rallies in support of gun control.
